MAUI

Caught the #20 Maui Bus to Lahaina at 9:30 a.m.
On the bus I met Amy from New York and we did a walking tour of Lahaina together.

This Banyan tree was planted in April, 1873, on the 50th Anniversary of Christian missionary work in Lahaina. The tree was imported from India. It now stands 60 ft high with 12 major trunks in addition to the huge core and stretches over a 200-ft area and shades 2/3 acre. (It's really big!)

I had to get my picture taken by the tree, too.

Old Lahaina Courthouse (1860)
Served as customs house for whaling and trade ships as well as center for government offices.

Baldwin House (1834-1835)
Oldest house still standing on the island of Maui

Wo Hing Museum (1912)
The Wo Hing Society of Chinese immigrants built this structure as a social meeting hall.
Upstairs is a temple and downstairs the social hall.

Cookhouse Theater
The Wo Hing Society built this cookhouse and community kitchen next door to the social hall.

U.S. Seamen's Hospital (1833)

Lahaina Jodo Mission
The mission is a replica of an authentic Japanese Buddhist Temple.

This 12-ft high bronze Buddha statue was installed in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.

Lahaina Prison (1853)

Built to house rowdy sailors from the whaling ships for short periods of time when they got too drunk or disorderly.

Waiola Church
First Christian Church on Maui - Founded 1823

Waiola Cemetery
King Kaumauali'i and Queen Keopuolani are buried here.

After the walk we had shave ice - my first!

Took the #20 Maui Bus back to the cruise ship and had a late afternoon burger and fries in the Key West Bar & Grill. Fun day!
